Learning the seven days of the week is one of the first calendar skills children pick up at home and at school. This free generator makes a tracing sheet with one day on every line, so your child can trace Monday to Sunday in dotted letters and then write each day again on the three-line guides.

Tips for Teaching the Days of the Week

Say the days out loud in order every morning, or sing a short days-of-the-week song. Put a simple calendar on the fridge and let your child cross off each day. Talk about which days are school days and which are the weekend, and use words like yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Every day starts with a capital letter, so this is a good chance to practise tall letters. If seven in a row feels like a lot, use the lines slider to make fewer, bigger rows and trace a few days at a time.

Spelling the Tricky Days

Wednesday is the one that catches almost everybody. Say it as it is written, Wed-nes-day, while tracing. Tuesday and Thursday are also easy to mix up, so trace them next to each other and say the first sound of each. Every day ends in the same word, day, which makes it a nice pattern to point out.

Classroom and Home Routines

Trace one day as part of the morning routine and say, “Today is …”. In a classroom, print one sheet per child, cut the rows into strips and let children put the days in order. Once your child is comfortable, combine the days with a short sentence such as “On Monday I go to school” on blank lined paper.

Most children from about age 4 to 7. Younger children can trace one or two days at a time, and older ones can trace all seven and then copy them from memory.
