Free Printable Counting 1 to 20 Worksheets

Counting to 20 is a big step after counting to 10. The numbers from 11 to 20 follow new patterns, and children also have to link each digit to the right number word. On this free worksheet each page has a row of ten numbers repeated on ten lines, so your child traces every number ten times.

Page 1 covers 1 to 10 and page 2 covers 11 to 20. Use the Previous and Next buttons under the preview to flip through the pages before you print. The PDF you download includes both pages. If you also want the number words, change Layout to One number per line and turn on Show number words.

Why the Numbers 11 to 20 Are Tricky

Eleven and twelve don’t follow any pattern, so children simply have to learn them. From thirteen to nineteen most words end in -teen, but the sounds come in the opposite order to the digits: in 14 the 4 is written last yet heard first, as in four-teen. Tracing each number again and again helps the shapes of the digits stick.

Ways to Practise Counting to 20

Lay out 20 buttons or blocks in two rows of ten and count them as you trace. Write the numbers on cards, shuffle them and put them back in order. Count up to 20 and then back down for a rocket countdown. One page a day is plenty, and children enjoy colouring the star at the end of each line.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is counting 1 to 20?

Two pages. Page 1 has 1 to 10 repeated on ten lines and page 2 has 11 to 20. You can flip between them in the preview, and both are included in the PDF.

Can I put all 20 numbers on one page?

Yes. Change Layout to One number per line and choose 20 numbers per page. The letters become smaller, so this suits older children or revision.

Can I add the number words?

Yes. Change Layout to One number per line and turn on Show number words, so each line reads like 1 one.

What age are these worksheets for?

Mostly ages 4 to 7, once children can trace simple numbers. Younger children can start with one page and add more as they gain confidence.
