Free Name Tracing Generator for Preschool and Kindergarten

Our free name tracing generator turns any name into dotted, outline or solid-gray letters on 3-line writing guides. Type a name, choose a school-style font and download a printable PDF in seconds. It works for first names, full names and short words.

It is also ideal handwriting name practice: children trace the dotted name first, then copy it on the blank line without help. Choose 1 to 10 lines, print on A4 or US Letter, and switch on the green start arrow if you want to show where the name begins.

Handwriting Name Practice Tips

Begin with 3 lines and the dotted style. Have your child say each letter out loud while tracing. When they feel confident, switch to outline or solid gray and ask them to write the name without tracing. Short, happy sessions work better than long ones.

Choosing the Right Tracing Style for a Name

Dotted letters are the best place to begin, because the dots show exactly where the pencil should travel. Outline letters leave more room and suit children who already control a pencil well. Solid gray is the lightest support: the letters are there to follow, but the child decides how to move. Working through the three styles over a few weeks gives a natural path from tracing to independent writing.

Long Names and Nicknames

A child’s name starts with a capital letter and continues in lowercase, which is the pattern used in school. For a long name such as Alexander or Elizabeth, use fewer lines so the letters stay large; the generator shrinks a long name to fit the line, so one name per line stays readable. A nickname is a perfectly good place to start, and the full name can come later.

How Often Should Children Practise?

Two or three short sessions a week are plenty. Stop while your child is still happy. Praise a careful start and a relaxed pencil grip rather than perfect shapes, and let them colour the star at the end of each line. Keep each finished sheet and compare the first one with a sheet from a month later to see progress.

Most children start between ages 3 and 5. Use big dotted letters and 1–3 lines for beginners.

Which font is best for name tracing?
