What is word tracing?

Word tracing means writing over a dotted word, one letter after another, until the movement feels natural. It connects handwriting with spelling and reading: while a child traces sun they see the letters in order, say the sounds and feel how the word is built. This generator lets you type any list of words and turns it into a printable worksheet with three-line guides.

How to choose words

Short, common words work best at first. Sight words such as the, and and you appear in almost every book, so tracing them speeds up early reading. Spelling-list words from school, topic words (animals, colours, family) and words from a story you are reading all make good choices. Keep to between five and ten words per page so the letters stay large.

Tips

Ask your child to say the word, trace it, then cover it and write it from memory on the empty line. Practise a few words each day rather than a long list once a week.
