Free Printable Skip Counting Worksheets

Skip counting means counting in jumps instead of ones, such as 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20. It is a bridge between simple counting and multiplication, and children also use it when telling the time and counting coins. This worksheet traces the numbers in the pattern you choose.

It is set to count by 5s from 5 to 100, with a row of 10 numbers repeated on ten lines, over two pages (5 to 50, then 55 to 100). Change Count by to 2s, 5s or 10s, and change From and To to start wherever you like. The Previous and Next buttons let you preview every page before you download the PDF.

Counting by 2s, 5s and 10s

Counting by 2s from 2 gives the even numbers, and counting by 2s from 1 gives the odd numbers. Counting by 5s always ends in 5 or 0, which links neatly to the minutes on a clock and to nickels. Counting by 10s is the easiest of the three and a good place to start: 10, 20, 30 and on up to 100.

Ways to Practise

Hop along a number line and say each number you land on. Colour the numbers on a hundred chart as you count, and see the pattern appear. Count real things in groups: socks in pairs for 2s, fingers on a hand for 5s. Then trace the numbers here to practise writing them.

From Skip Counting to Multiplication

Multiplication tables are skip counting in disguise. Counting by 5s four times lands on 20, which is the same as 4 × 5. Children who can chant the skip counting patterns find it much easier to learn their times tables later. For plain counting practice, see counting 1 to 20 or counting 1 to 100.

Frequently asked questions

What can I skip count by?

2s, 5s and 10s using the Count by menu. For other steps, type your own list into the text box, one number per line.

Can I start at a number other than zero?

Yes. Set From to any number you like, for example 3, and the sheet counts on from there in the step you picked.

Can I show number words?

Yes. Change Layout to One number per line and turn on Show number words, so each line shows the digit and its word, such as 10 ten.

What age are these worksheets for?

Mostly ages 5 to 8, when children are moving from counting in ones to skip counting.
